This was the moment a 100-year-old peepal tree came crashing down after it was caught in a flood in eastern India's Bihar.

Footage shows residents watching on anxiously as the tree collapses into the river.

Residents of Sobhepur said the water level in the river Ganga, which flows by the village, had gone up over the last few days seriously eroding the bank.

Many structures on the bank had collapsed into the floodwater and the ground around the tree also steadily diminished.

Eyewitnesses said the tree could have been saved if the government officials had taken measures to protect the bank.
