Heartrending moment mother dog fights off leopard but loses her babies
A mother dog fought off a leopard but still ended up losing her two pups.
The heartrending moment was captured by a CCTV camera at a facility owned by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at Baikathol near Karwar in southern India on October 17.
The stray dog was sleeping with her pups when a young leopard attacked her from behind.
Though suprised, the mother dog fought off the leopard and gave the predator a chase.
As the mother left her pups unguarded, another young leopard appeared and carried the pups away.
Local residents said a leopardess was frequently sighted in the area a year ago with two cubs. The cubs may have grown up enough to carry out the attack on their own, they said.
Encounters with leopards are common in the area as they come from a nearby forest looking for prey.
