A large fire burned hundreds of homes in Indonesia on Monday night (October 19).

Flames ripped through the dense settlement in the coastal area of Jayapura City, Papua Province.

North Jayapura Sector Police Chief, Adjunct Commissioner Hendry Bawiling, said an estimated 100 houses were damaged in the blaze.

He said: "We have not confirmed the cause of the fire which has scorched around 100 of these residents' houses."
The police confirmed that there were no deaths. However, there were two residents who suffered burns and received medical treatment at the hospital.

Officials said that the handling of the fire was hampered by narrow road access. Fire engines could not enter the approach to the fire site.

Hendry said it took three hours to bring the fire under control.

He said: "Officers are still collecting data at the fire location. The value of the loss will only be known later after the data collection is complete."
