UK woman prevents drivers from getting fines after new traffic initiatives anger locals
A woman donning a high-vis jacket is saving motorists in Chiswick, London hundreds of pounds.
With the help of a sign, the woman, who has not been identified, stands on Turnham Green Terrace in Chiswick and prevent advancing drivers from getting driving penalties of up to £130.
Footage from October 22 shows the woman explaining to motorists that driving any further will result in a fine.
Drivers are then seen performing U-turns after the warning to prevent triggering a traffic camera further down the road.
The traffic initiative of "Low Traffic Neighbourhoods" was engineered by local authorities in the wake of COVID-19 to encourage more cycling and other modes of transport.
Local traders claim a drop off in trade has been caused by the initiative; discouraging shoppers who drive in the local area.
The filmer told Newsflare: "This lady is saving drivers hundreds of thousands of pounds on Turnham Green Terrace, Chiswick.
"Since new restrictions came in, many motorists miss the signs at the junction and drive into the terrace, triggering Camera 1.
"Then this lady in a high-vis jacket steps out waving a placard.
"It says if they proceed further, they'll trigger Camera 2 – and get a £130 Penalty Traffic Notice (reduced to £65 for quick payment).
"It's one of the more extreme examples of how people are fighting against new Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.
"The government is encouraging 'active travel' because of COVID-19.
"In this part of Chiswick, Hounslow Council has issued tickets worth well over half a million pounds."
