Wrecks of boats serve as tragic reminder of river disaster 60 years ago

On October 25th 1960, in thick fog, two oil tankers, the Arkendale H and Wastdale H collided in the River Severn off Sharpness Dock. They crashed into the Severn Rail Bridge, causing a span to crash onto the vessels and the resulting explosion 'set the river ablaze' as oil burned on the surface of the water. Five of the eight crewmen lost their lives that night, and the damage to the bridge resulted in its demolition.
