More than 20,000 people were evacuated from the towns of Gumaca, Calauag, Guinayangan, and Lopez provinces in the Southern Tagalog region of the Philippines due to Tropical Storm Saudel.

Footage shows structures and farmland submerged in floodwaters, while motorists struggled to travel in the submerged roads.

Resident Chaelrose Abril said they rushed to their relatives after the rains stopped to escape the deluge on October 21 but they were stranded.

She said: "It is very sad to see that most of our rice fields were submerged by floods."

Another local, Peewee Bacuno, recorded footage where the vehicles were struggling to pass through the flooded area.

He said: "It was the worst flood we've ever had here in Quezon, we are all devastated, especially in the time of a pandemic."

Local officials sent relief goods to the affected residents who took shelter in the evacuation centres around the region.

Countries surrounding the West Philippine Sea such as Vietnam, Hong Kong, and China are on alert as the severe tropical storm Saudel, known locally as Pepito, follows that path.

Countries in Southeast Asia such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia are at the peak of their annual rainy season.

Heavy rains this month have caused floods and landslides in central Vietnam and western Cambodia, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes.
