A white farmer waved the old South African flag on Sunday (October 25th) during a protest against farm murders outside parliament in Cape Town.

The mostly white demonstrators called on the government to do more to protect farmers from violence.

Farm murders are an explosive issue in South Africa where the vast majority of farms are owned by white, Afrikaans people.

Activists have pushed the idea that they are victims of a "white genocide" aiming to force them from their land.

Critics say farm killings are not racially motivated and point to the high murder rate nationally.

A march to South Africa’s parliament by mostly white farmers to protest farm attacks attracted a crowd of a few hundred people. The protest was also supported by the bikers club, Ride to Freedom.

Western Cape MEC for Agriculture, Ivan Meyer, addressed the crowd in front of Parliament and said farmers were facing a direct threat and stressed the importance of agriculture to the economy of the Western Cape and South Africa as a whole.

The flags of the apartheid government and the old Boer Republic were also seen on display at the protest. The displaying if these flags are seen as divisive because of their association with apartheid atrocities and the oppression of black people.
