Riot police protected the German Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday (October 26) as the diplomatic building became the focus of pro-democracy protesters.

Demonstrators announced they would march to the embassy on Monday evening and demand action over the King's continued presence in the country, which has sparked controversy.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Germany is looking into the behaviour of King Rama 10, Maha Vajiralongkorn, amid claims that the monarch is conducting political affairs and ruling from foreign soil.

Footage shows riot police being deployed around the embassy and razor-wire fences being set up.

The German Embassy said in a statement it ''recognises the right to peaceful protest'' and it would ''receive messages addressed to the Federal Government'' that are handed over by the protesters in a ''peaceful manner."

Thailand's anti-government protests started with small groups of student activists but have grown in recent weeks.

Protesters are calling for democratic reforms, constitutional changes, and the resignation of the prime minister.
