Thousands of anti-monarchy protesters marched towards the German Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday evening (26 October).

The demonstrators demanded action over the Thai king's lengthy presence in Germany, which has sparked controversy.

As crowds gathered at the Sam Yan intersection, boxes full of white construction helmets arrived and were handed out to those involved -- a tactic also used during unrest in Hong Kong.

They then marched to the German Embassy where a letter was handed over urging German officials to probe the King's affairs.

The embassy has become a focus of the recent protests after German politicians raised questions over the King's presence in their country. The German government also said it does not want foreign leaders to conduct their domestic affairs from its soil.

The anti-government protests started with small groups of student activists but have grown into a sweeping movement calling for democratic reforms, constitutional changes, the resignation of the prime minister and curbs on the power of the royal family.

After a few days break, protesters converged again on Sunday (October 25) outside the Central World shopping mall at the Ratchaprasong Intersection in the centre of the Thai capital.

The protests have been ongoing since the start of the year but large demonstrations erupted earlier this month with rallies across the country.

The Prime Minister issued a 'severe state of emergency' in response to the unrest but this was recently rescinded. Military chiefs have also threatened curfews.

Dozens of protest organisers and leaders have been arrested.
