South Africa has settled one of its largest Apartheid-era land disputes, returning land to the descendants of those it was taken from,

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille were the keynote speakers at a handover ceremony in the small West Coast town of Ebenhaeser. Title deeds were handed over as part of the ceremony.

More than 23700 hectares (58563 acres) of land was restored to the descendants of the people it was taken from by the then-Apartheid government in 1926. The property has been placed in a community trust for the benefit of all stakeholders.

Both President Ramaphosa and Premier Zille declared that the dispossession of land was the original sin of apartheid. In 2017, at the 54th national congress of the ruling African National Congress, the party adopted a policy of land expropriation.

In 2018 President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that a parliamentary process to amend section 25 of the constitution would start, in order to allow for expropriation of land without compensation.
