Four people, including two police officers, were injured on Tuesday morning (October 27) as gunshots were fired near the Retiro train station in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A man, identified by police forces as a rough sleeper, snatched a service weapon off an officer and opened fire.

The man was wounded in the abdomen and at least one male officer was shot in the ankle. A female officer who came to the aid of her colleague was left with an injury to one hand, while a passerby also suffered a “non-serious” injury.

According to police sources, the incident began when one of the officers approached the homeless man, who was intoxicated and had been in the area for several days.

The four people involved in the incident were treated by emergency services before being taken to two separate hospitals.

The incident, which took place at around 8am, started when a man – identified by police sources as someone who was sleeping rough – snatched a service weapon off an officer on Avenida Dr. José María Ramos Mejía, near the San Martín rail terminal.

A struggle ensued, during which the thief was wounded in the abdomen and at least male one officer was shot in the ankle. A female officer who came to the aid of her colleague was left with an injury to one hand, while a passerby also suffered a “non-serious” injury.

According to police sources cited by the agency, the incident began when one of the officers approached the homeless man, who was intoxicated and had been in the area for several days. The sources said he had been involved in a public disturbance last Sunday, after which he was briefly taken into custody for a few hours.

When he was asked to move on, however, a scuffle began, during which the individual gained control of the policeman.

The second female officer then arrived on the scene, tackling the suspect, wounding him in the abdomen in the process. She suffered an injury to the hand as a result, while the male officer was shot in the ankle. A passerby riding a bicycle was also “grazed” by a bullet, suffering a minor injury, police sources said.

The four people involved in the incident were treated by emergency services, before being taken to two separate City hospitals.
