A huge shark 7 meters long and weighing 2.5 tonnes was buried after becoming stranded in an estuary in Indonsia on Monday (October 26).

The creature, which appeared to be a whale shark, ​was seen for five previous days swimming in shallow water in the Batang Surantih river estuary in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra Province.

Even though local fishermen had tried to herd it into deeper waters, the giant fish returned to shore and eventually died.

Locals later had to use a digger to move the shark onto land where it could be buried. But because of its size, even the digger struggled to push it into its grave and the burial was only completed the next day (October 27).

It is the fourth time in two years the area has seen a stranding like this, although the size of the shark this time was unusual.

Due to its large size, related agencies and local residents finally buried the fish, not far from the coastal area. One heavy equipment was deployed to pull it and insert it into the prepared hole. However, heavy equipment had difficulty inserting the shark carcass. The fish was just buried the next day, Tuesday 27 October.
It is not yet known exactly what caused the sharks to be stranded in the area. However, this incident is not the first time in Pesisir Selatan Regency.
In the last two years, this is the fourth recorded incident. On 6 and 9 August 2019, similar fish were also stranded in the coastal area of ​​Batang Kapas District. Then on October 19, 2019, a similar incident also repeated at a nearby location.
