Pro-monarchy supporters allegedly bribed with cash and beer to join rallies in Thailand
A protester who appeared at a rally supporting the Thai king claims he was offered cash and unlimited beer to join the parade.
The man, seen in the video wearing a yellow shirt, told friends he was paid to attend the pro-monarchy counter-protest in Bangkok, Thailand.
The man said the protesters were not only paid money but also plied with food and bottles of beer.
He said: "After we had joined the rally in front of the parliament, we received one thousand baht banknotes. They also gave us non-stop beer and food all night.''
Footage of the claims sparked outrage from pro-democracy protesters.
Activist Taisorn Phonsuwan asked the relevant government departments to explain where they take money to the yellow-clad groups.
He said: "I want the local government to clarify the money they paid to the protesters because if the bribe was from the government budget, it was not fair for all taxpayers like us."
Anti-government protests have erupted across the country this month amid anger towards the monarchy and military leaders.
The Thailand anti-government protests started with small groups of student activists but have grown into a sweeping movement calling for democratic reforms, constitution changes, the resignation of the prime minister and reductions in powers of the royal family.
They have sparked clashes with police and been met with a series of pro-establishment marches with people wearing yellow shirts to show their allegiance to the monarch.
Dozens of protest organisers and leaders have been arrested following the anti-government marches. Two of the most prominent - Parit 'Penguin' Chiwarak and Panusaya 'Rung' Sithijirawattanakul - face multiple charges and have been denied bail.
