Medical equipment catches fire in COVID ICU in India
Nurses on duty took immediate action after medical equipment caught fire in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a COVID medical centre on October 29 in Mumbai, India
The fire broke out in the high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) that was placed adjacent to a patient's bed in the ICU unit at Dahisar Kandarpada COVID Centre.
In the video, captured by CCTV cameras, flames can be seen erupting from the medical equipment while a nurse, wearing PPE kit, was at a patient's bed to serve him food.
The nurse, whose name is Anupama Tiwari, dragged the flaming equipment away from the bed-bound patient, while other staff members doused the small blaze with a fire extinguisher. The power supply to the equipment was also promptly cut off, preventing the fire from spreading.
The medical staff members of Dahisar Kandarpada COVID Centre are being praised for their prompt action.
In a statement, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which runs the facility, said: "Officers and staff assigned to the COVID centres have been imparted training on fire fighting and disaster management. Today, employees have set an example of how to use it without being distracted by such incidents."
