Creepy robot wolves are being used to scare away wild bears in Japan
A town in Japan is using creepy robot wolves to scare away wild bears.
The terrifying 'Monster Wolf' was designed by machine parts manufacturer Ohta Seiki to tackle the problem of bears raiding gardens to scavenge for food in the Autumn before hibernating.
The robots have been installed in Hokkaido to ward off wolves and other wild animals by mimicking the aggressive behaviour of a wolf hunting in the night.
Attached to a metal stand, it has a built-in infrared sensor that detects when an animal has drawn near.
Once the sensors are triggered, it will begin to sound off menacing howls and flashing demonic red lights in its eyes to frighten the wild intruder.
Its head violently swivels 360 degrees and will only stop when its sensors detect that the animal has retreated.
Aside from the howling wolf sound, it has a library of 60 other startling sounds, including human voices, and even the sound of gunshots.
The variety of sounds prevents animals from being accustomed and unafraid to the noise.
Ohta Seiki president Yuji Ohta said: ''If this can help create an environment that bears and people can both live in, I will be happy.''
There are currently 62 wolf robots installed in different communities in Hokkaido, and since the installation in Takikawa town, there have been no bear sighting reported.
Due to its success, the company plans to produce more of the robots in other prefectures in Japan.
