Huge numbers of people line up to vote soon after dawn in New York

Long lines stretched out of polling stations in New York today (November 3) as the US voted in the presidential election.

The contest is one of the most contentious in America's recent history, driving far higher than normal turnout.

Democrats also contend that policies around polling station locations typically favour Republican areas, often more sparsely populated, over Democrat-leaning ones, often in more densely-populated urban areas.

The result, they claim, is that the wait to vote is often longer in Democratic areas. Republican officials deny the claims.
