Rescuers and volunteers were seen racing to save over 100 pilot whales stranded on Sri Lanka’s western coast in the country’s biggest mass beaching on November 2.

The incident took place in Panadura, 25 km (15 miles) south of Colombo.

A video of the rescue operation shows Sri Lanka’s navy and a band of volunteers from nearby villages racing against time to rescue the school of whales washed ashore.

They then try to push the mammals back into the sea after ending up at the beaches.

Sailors from the navy and the coastguard joined local volunteers and had pushed back at least 120 whales by the dawn of November 3 after a gruelling overnight rescue, navy spokesman Indika de Silva said.

He added that despite their best efforts, two of the whales died of the injuries sustained when they beached.
