More than 100 children have been taken to hospitals after being infected by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in northeastern Thailand.

Doctors fear an RSV outbreak in Khon Khaen province as the number of cases exploded throughout the region.

Footage recorded on November 3 shows parents inside hospitals with their children crying as young as two-years-old.

They were given health check-ups as well as an RSV testing inside the clinics with their parents.

Doctor Chanpen Pratipanawat from the Ratchapruek Hospital said the virus causes respiratory tract infections in the lungs among children.

She said: "The cases have increased in the past few weeks. Many of them were admitted to the intensive care unit for children."

The doctor added that at least 80 per cent of the children who had been tested for the virus turned out positive.

The doctor suggested that parents watch their children because its symptoms are almost similar to ordinary flu.

Khon Kaen Governor Somsak Changtrakul said they have since informed the public hospitals, clinics, and schools to take a closer look at the children.

He said: "All school teachers will watch the students. If any of them appear to have the flu, they should take a sick leave from class or see the doctor. Everyone needs to wear a face mask."
