Gold worth $57395 seized at airport in southern India

Gold weighing 816 grams worth Rs 42.5 lakh (USD 57395) was seized from two passengers at an airport in southern India’s Tamil Nadu on November 5 and November 4 respectively.

The two separate incidents were recorded at Chennai International Airport.

Visuals from the customs department show the gold paste recovered from the passengers laid out on a table.

Based on intelligence inputs, one passenger named Mohamed Shaik aged 28, flying in from Dubai by Emirates flight EK0544 was intercepted at the exit on November 5. On being confronted, he admitted to carrying gold paste.

A total of 356 grams of gold worth Rs 18.4 lakh (USD 24846) was recovered in the form of four gold paste bundles.

Similarly, another passenger named Razik Ali Hajamohaideen aged 45 flying in from Dubai by Fly Dubai airlines FZ 8517 confessed to carrying the yellow metal on November 4.

A total of 460 grams of gold paste valued at Rs 24.1 lakh (USD 34551) was recovered after extraction.

Further investigation is underway while one of them has been arrested.
