Gritters keep Cumbrian roads open

Gritters were hard at work in Cumbria keeping the main roads open this morning. The A591 between Ambleside and Keswick is the main artery through the Lake District, linking the south with the north. After leaving Grasmere it climbs up Dunmail Raise and leads to Keswick in the north of the county.

Cumbria County Council (@CumbriaCC ) tweeted this morning.
"Our fleet of 30 gritters have been working flat out for 36 hours and have used 300 tonnes of salt on every run"

The road climbs to a height of 238m. Even though the road is a priority for gritting, when it snows, cars and buses normally find it impassible until the gritters have done their job.
