Paleontologist claims to have discovered fossils of new dinosaur species in central India
Seven fossilized eggs of a herbivorous dinosaur species belonging to the Cretaceous period have been found in central India's Madhya Pradesh. The fossils were discovered in Mohantola locality in the Mandla district.
A video witnessing the incident features the fossilized eggs resting on the ground. Experts examine the eggs while taking in the layout of the surroundings.
The eggs were spotted in a newly-dug pond when the area was under the COVID-19 lockdown. Some of the fossils are deformed, while the rest are still in the shape of eggs.
Professor PK Kathal, who is affiliated with the Centre of Advanced Study in Geology at Sagar-based Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya studied the eggs using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The eggs have an average circumference of 40 cm with an average weight of 2.6 kg (5.7 lbs) each.
The eggs are from the Upper Cretaceous period and seem to belong to a new species of beaked or sauropod dinosaur hitherto unknown in India.
Madhya Pradesh has always been a hotspot for discovering dinosaur fossils. The first of them were discovered in the Jabalpur district in 1828 and later in the Dhar district as well.
