Nearly a quarter-million dollars worth of gold was seized at Chennai International Airport in southern India on November 9, with a rectal exam leading to the full discovery of the smuggled goods.

On Monday, frisking of four Dubai returnees who arrived via Emirates flight EK 544 yielded two packets of gold paste weighing 114 grams stitched inside the face mask, other gold weighing 50 grams, and 16 bundles of gold paste concealed in the rectum.

The total value of the gold was worth $131,383 in US dollars which recovered and seized under the Customs Act of 1962, with three of the returnees arrested.

Earlier, seven passengers who had arrived from Dubai by Flights Indigo 6E 66 and Emirates EK 542 were intercepted at the exit on the suspicion of carrying gold.

12 bundles of gold paste were recovered from their rectum, 6 strips from jeans, and 5 gold cut bits were recovered from their pants pocket.

The total amount of gold was just under a quarter-million US dollars ($248,801) total with the investigation still underway.
