Thousands of Burmese residents celebrated the Aung San Suu Kyi election victory in Yangon, Myanmar, on Tuesday evening (November 10).

Supporters filled the streets of the city to mark the ruling party's success by wearing red shirts and waving flags.

On Monday, the country's ruling party announced that they had won enough seats in the parliament based on unofficial vote counts. The military-backed opposition dispute the result.

The leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, won a landslide victory in 2015 and has overseen the country's move away from oppressive military rule. However, she has been criticised by western powers for her treatment of Rohingya Muslims.

Myanmar, then known as Burma, was the second-wealthiest country in Southeast Asia while under British rule from 1824 to 1948 before the country became independent.
