Terrified residents watched water levels rise on the Marikina River in the Philippines today (November 12) during Typhoon Vamco.

Houses were submerged along with vehicles so they took refuge to the bridge in the Marikina City area of Manila, where land had not yet been reached by the rising water.

A ferry crashed into the same bridge and the wreckage can be seen in the video.

Theresa Ferrer Melo, who lives in the area, said they were worried that the typhoon could bring the same destruction as the deadly Ketsana from ten years ago.

She said: "I am afraid. It has been really a horrible experience, like ten years ago when typhoon Ketsana hit our area hard."

Typhoon Vamco made landfall in the Quezon province on Luzon island on Tuesday evening before leaving the region and moving towards the capital Manila, home to more than two million people, where it made landfall again.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said Thursday that it has yet to determine the number of casualties from typhoon Vamco, or Ulysses, as all pertinent data are still being consolidated.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Vamco was a Category Two typhoon and made a ‘signal 3’ warning, with signal 5 being the highest.

They warned of ‘’heavy damage to high-risk structures’’ and ‘’increasing damage to old, dilapidated residential structures, and houses of light materials.”

The agency said there would be ‘’widespread disruption of electrical power and communication services’'.

The storm comes just over a week after Typhoon Goni, also known as Typhoon Rolly, killed 74 people and destroyed thousands of homes in the Philippines when it made landfall on November 1.
