Thailand protest turns violent as crowds scuffle with police and climb monument
Protesters scuffled with police before climbing on top of the Democracy Monument in Bangkok, Thailand, this evening (November 14th).
Officers surrounded the statue in the centre of the capital where thousands of demonstrators had gathered calling for political reforms.
However, crowds faced-off with the police and pushed back metal barriers. Footage shows the scuffling with officers before breaking through the human barricade.
Several protesters then used a bamboo ladder to climb on top of the monument. Large white sheets were unfurled around the grass banks.
The chaotic scenes unfolded after a day of largely peaceful protests across the city.
They called it 'Mob Fest' and LGBT and sex work activists were also at the protest alongside students and opposition groups. A small group of pro-monarchy royal supporters wearing yellow shirts gathered on the outskirts.
Thousands of protesters gathered across the city calling for the country's prime minister to resign. Officials said that 5,000 police had been assigned to control the events, with four rallies taking place across Bangkok.
There were three other demonstrations taking place in other parts of Bangkok, including a rally aimed at tackling perceived gender inequality and another at the Education Ministry on Ratchadamnoen Avenue where activists are criticising the astonishingly bad levels of education in the country.
Thousands of protests have taken place in recent months across Thailand. Activists are calling for a new constitution, the resignation of the prime minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha and reforms of the monarchy.
