No peace for this lizard – first attacked by ants, then a bird

Rosenberg’s Monitors (Varanus rosenbergi) are large, fast predatory lizards that are found across southern Australia. They are particularly common in southern Western Australia, where they are also called goannas. This Rosenberg’s Monitor was hunting along the edge of Stokes Inlet, when a large aggressive honeyeater, called the Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata) began dive-bombing it. The lizard took shelter in some long grass and was basking in the afternoon sun when it was disturbed by biting ants. It moved into the open, only to be attacked again by the Wattlebird. The monitor then moved rapidly into deep cover to escape its harasser. Red Wattlebirds attack any animal that they see as a threat to themselves, their eggs or their chicks.
