Religious devotees in India's Madhya Pradesh take part in a five-day ritual where many submit valuables totalling millions to the Mahalakshmi temple situated in the Manak neighbourhood of Ratlam.

Footage from November 13 shows the inside of the temple that has ornate decorations with bundles of cash and many pieces of jewellery.

The devotees believe that if they offer their riches in the feet of Goddess Lakshmi, she bestows her blessings on them.

The devotions are initiated from Dhanteras, the first day marking the festival of Diwali in India.

Local reports claimed that many people waited in a one-kilometre-long queue to attend.

Devotees trusted their fortune worth millions to a temple as a part of an age-old five-day long tradition in central India's Madhya Pradesh from November 13. The ritual takes place at the Mahalakshmi temple situated in the Manak region of Ratlam.

A video witnessing the culture features the temple packed with riches from various people from across the country. The deity is decorated with bundles of cash and authentic jewelry, while the praying area is filled with varying amounts of money, gold, and ornaments that the devotees submit to the temple at the beginning of the festival.

People stand in 1 km long lines to present their riches and then again to collect them at the end of the five days.

With time, the security measures are also updated in the temple. A proper token and labeling system is established to avoid the mismatch of commodities. Apart from that, 18 cameras overlooking the possessions are installed in the temple while 32 armed security personnel surround the place. The Manak Chowk police station is also just a few meters away from the temple.

This tradition has been going on in the temple ever since it was built about 300 years ago. Nearly four generations of the priests from the same family have served the temple and continue to do so.
