Flood-hit resident uses rod to catch parcel floating past house in the Philippines
This is the hilarious moment an old man used a rod to catch an online shopping parcel that floated past his house during Typhoon Vamco in the Philippines.
The old man stood at the edge of his second-floor roof as he and his neighbours tried to pull the parcel using long sticks in Marikina City on November 12.
The neighbourhood was submerged in 15ft-deep floodwater trapping residents on roofs and second-floor rooms of their homes.
They noticed the parcels floating from the warehouse nearby so one by one, they began to battle for the unclaimed deliveries.
In the video, the old man successfully reeled in one of the parcels and began unpacking his haul in front of his neighbours.
Excited residents watched on as the old man rummaged through the contents of the plastic.
He pulled out assorted pieces of items - some perfumes, a wristwatch, eyeglasses, and a pack of cigarettes among others.
They were from a warehouse that had launched a large online sale the day before - meaning that many packages were ready to send.
Onlooker Erwin Calicoy said he tried to catch one of the parcels as well but he was not as lucky as the old man.
Erwin said: "We knew there was a warehouse nearby so we patiently waited there holding our poles to fish out the parcels.
"It made us forget about the devastating flood for a moment and had fun while waiting for the typhoon to leave."
Typhoon Vamco, known locally as Ulysses, killed at least 63 people in the Philippines before moving eastwards and making landfall in Vietnam.
