A 13-year-old child bride was made to marry a 48-year-old man in a bizarre wedding ceremony in the Philippines.

Relatives and friends attended the unusual event to give their best wishes to the couple in the town of Mamasapano in Maguindanao province on October 22.

The child bride, Asnaira Pamansag Mugaling, was seen wearing a white traditional gown seated beside his groom in a black and gold suit while the guests crowded around them.

She was married to Abdulrzak Ampatuan as his fifth wife in a day-long celebration with Islamic religious rites.

Asnaira said: ''I am not afraid of him because he is nice to me. I am learning how to cook because I’m not good at it now. I want to make my husband happy.''

The wedding started at the groom’s house where he was given a sermon on how to become a good husband.

The groom was then accompanied by wedding guests in a festive procession with drum bands playing as they walked to the young bride’s house. They where they were seated beside each other while everyone cheered.

Three weeks after their wedding, Abdulzrak built a small house for the young bride where they stay together.

He is working as a farmer while his new wife does the household chores and sometimes even helps take care of the man’s children - who are her own age - from his elder wives.

Abdulrzak said he is happy that he has someone new to spend his life with.

He said: “I am happy to have found her and spend my days with her taking care of my children.”

The newly-wed couple said they plan to have children when the bride turns 20-years-old.

The delighted groom added that he will help send his wife to school so she can study while waiting for her to be ready to have children.

He said: “I will pay for her school because I want her to get an education while waiting for the right time to have children.''

In some parts of the Philippines, especially in the Muslim-majority Mindanao region, a minor is allowed to marry as long she reaches puberty marked by menstruation.

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) data shows the country has the 12th highest number of child brides in the world at 726,000 cases so far.
