New Zealand man reveals mysterious 12-million-year-old fossil
This timelapse footage shows an amateur palaeontologist uncovering an ancient fossil that he says is "12-million-years-old."
The fossil, found on a beach in Newstead, rural New Zealand, on November 15, was encased in rock. Palaeontologist Morne (Mamlambo on YouTube) carefully picks away at the rock for 11 hours to reveal a fossil nautiloid.
A nautiloid is a mainly extinct rounded marine animal.
Morne told Newsflare: "I found a very strange fossil out on the beach. It appeared to be hollow with some bits protruding out of it. It's mid-Miocene in age, which is estimated at around 12-million-years-old.
"I used an angle grinder to remove most of the rock and then used my air scribe. Because the fossil was so fragile, I had to constantly consolidate it using B72 and a very thin superglue that would penetrate the fossil and keep the shell from being blown away by the air scribe.
"The vibrations from the air scribe (which vibrates at 10 000 per minute) caused a crack to appear in the fossil. Eventually, it went all the way through the fossil, and I could remove the other half. Unfortunately, some of the shell stayed on the other half. If I wanted to, I could glue the two halves back together and continue prepping, but I am happy with it as is."
