Homes were submerged by floods after Hurricane Iota caused devastation in Honduras.

Footage filmed on November 18 shows a resident taking refuge on the roof of the building in the city of San Pedro Sula in Cortes on Wednesday afternoon (November 18).

Hurricane Iota made landfall in Nicaragua on Monday evening before causing more damage as it moved through El Salvador, Panama, Nicaragua and Belize.

Many properties in Nicaragua and Honduras have lost access to electricity and phone services.

The storm, which brought strong wind and heavy rain leading to floods, has reportedly killed 19 people across the region as of November 18.

Iota's wind speed has since dropped to 30 mph and is moving west at 12 mph, weakening to tropical depression status, according to the National Hurricane Center. Some parts of the region are expected to receive more than 12 inches of rain today.

Hurricane Eta had earlier caused severe destruction, killing more than 182 people and left 116 missing across Central America.
