Air Customs officials seize gold worth $29,612 in southern India

Air Custom Department officials have seized 420 grams (0.92 lbs) gold worth Rs 22 lakh (USD 29612) in southern India’s Tamil Nadu. The development took place at Chennai International Airport on November 17.

Visuals of the incident feature the six bundles of gold paste seized from the passengers.

A passenger named Syed Abthahir was intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall and two bundles of gold paste weighing 260 grams (0.57 lbs) were recovered from his rectum. Upon extraction, 221 grams (0.48 lbs) of gold worth Rs 11.7 lakh (USD 15753) was recovered.

Similarly, Raj Mohamed who arrived from Dubai on an Emirates flight was searched and four bundles of gold paste weighing 224 grams (0.45 lbs) were recovered from him. Gold worth Rs 10.3 lakh (USD 13868) weighing 199 grams (0.43 lbs) was extracted from him.

An investigation is underway and the development took place in accordance with the Customs Act.
