Mother dog feeds stray cat like its own in eastern India
In an unusual incident, a female dog was spotted nursing a cat in eastern India’s Odisha on November 18. The incident took place in Baripal village of Kendujhar.
The video shows the lactating dog resting on the ground while nursing a stray cat like one of her own. She can be seen lying peacefully as the feline suckles for well over two minutes without a break.
Kittens, if orphaned, miss their mothers and suckling makes them feel secure and loved. They can continue to nurse on other animals and inanimate objects through adulthood, especially when stressed.
On the other hand, the cat might be fulfilling the dog’s maternal instincts to nurse babies in the absense of her own.
