Gold worth $278,115 seized by air customs officials in southern India
Gold worth Rs 20,625,000 ($278,115.67) was seized by the air customs department of southern India's Chennai International Airport on November 20. A total of six people were arrested for smuggling. All the suspects were intercepted at the terminals.
A video featuring the smuggled items showcases two packets and a bundle covered in black tape, and gold nuggets weighing 1.3 kg (2.866 lbs).
On extraction, the two packets and the bundle yielded 2.7 kg (5.952 lbs) gold valued at Rs 1.39 crore ($1,87,433.11) while the gold nuggets were valued at Rs 67.25 lakh ($90,682.56).
On receiving a tip, Airport Customs Commissioner Rajan Chaudhary intercepted six passengers travelling from Dubai at the terminal. The suspects, identified as, Barkat Pasha, Chakla Sardar, Zakul Amith, Syed Ahmed, Mohammad Baisul, and Adam were detained and taken into custody.
Acting on a similar tip, the officials inspected a special flight coming in from Dubai and found the gold nuggets taped under a seat of the plane. The smugglers have been arrested while a probe is underway.
A total of 4 kg (8.818 lbs) gold valued at Rs 20,625,000 ($ 2,78,115.67) was seized by the airport authorities under the Customs Act of 1962.
