Palestinian mother-of-five Nayla Abu Jubbah this week became the first-ever female taxi driver in the Gaza Strip.

Although women have the same legal rights as men in the territory, in practice the trade has been entirely male.

“One day I was talking with a friend who works as a hairdresser and I said to her: ‘What would you say if we started a taxi service for women?’ She said it was a crazy idea,” the 39-year-old told local media.

However, Jubbah followed through with the idea and put to work the vehicle she purchased with an inheritance from her father.

Jubbah hopes to expand the business and says she particularly enjoys working with female customers who in turn appreciate being driven by a woman.

Jubbah says her work is in accordance with Sharia law which is promoted in the Gaza Strip.
