Gruesome footage shows a tiny female parasite wasp chewing its way out of a caterpillar egg while two males wait for it to come and mate.

Insect enthusiast Eva Wiedeman said she found the egg pod outside her home in Sullivan, Missouri.

She was curious why some of the eggs were darker than the other so she took a closer look at them using a microscope.

There she found the female parasite feeding on the eggs before mating with the male wasps waiting outside.

She said: “I do not try to intervene with nature. I just watch as it happens, they have their own cycle and I respect that.”

Parasitic wasps vary in behaviour, but many lay their eggs in the early stages of their host as eggs or pupa.
