A protester who dressed as Marvel's Captain America during Hong Kong protests in October 2019 has been jailed for almost six years.

Ma Chun-Man was given a five year and nine-month-long sentence on November 11, 2021, under the country's national security law.

Ma was convicted of inciting secession by chanting slogans promoting Hong Kong's independence from China.

Ma is the second person to be jailed under the law, which was passed in 2020 after protests the previous year.

Ma frequently appeared in protests disguised as the Marvel character was arrested many times during unrest that swept Hong Kong from June 2019.

Adam Ma Chun- Man, a protester who frequently appeared on protests disguised as the Marvel universe "Captain America", was arrested for the seventh time on Saturday 21 November 2020, during a protest which took place at a memorial for Chan Yin-lam, a young girl found deceased in the sea one year ago. Ma, a delivery driver by profession, unemployed since last month allegedly chanted protest slogans before being arrested. On Tuesday 24 November 2020, Ma was charged with "inciting secession", becoming the third person to be so charged under the National Security Law. The two previous persons charged under the draconian National Security Law were Tong Ying-kit, a biker who hit policemen with his bike on July 1st, 2020 while displaying a Hong Kong independence flag, and Tony Chung, a student activist accused of posting secessionist messages on social media. Another activist, Tam Tak Chi, is also arrested for similar slogans, but charged for "sedition", under a colonial era law.
