This is the creepy moment a woman claimed to have seen the soul of a man leave his body after he drowned in a river.

Shanel Gutierrez, 25, and her neighbours watched as rescuers battled to save the drowning worker from a river in Davao del Norte province, the Philippines on November 21.

The drowned man, Dondon, had been working in a nearby quarry when he reportedly tried to save a stray dog that had fallen into the water.

Dondon was able to push the dog to safer ground but he continued to slip into the deeper part of the water where his feet sank further into the mud.

His colleague noticed that the man had been missing for a while and asked for help after realising he could not be seen along the riverbanks.

Local officials found his body after two hours floating in the river, but they were not sure if he was still alive.

The rescuers used a backhoe from the quarry site to reach the man and save him while terrified residents were watching.

However, as they struggled to reach him, locals were shocked when they claim to have seen a thin mass of smoke emerging from the water where the man was. It appears to be a ghost.

Shanel, who recorded the incident, claimed that when she watched back the video it showed the spirit of the man departing from his body after he had died.

She said: "It was very creepy because I did not expect to capture that thing on my phone. I know it was his ghost. It gave me goosebumps when I watched it.''

Asked if she had used an app to fake the video, Shanel said that she had not tampered with the original video.

She added: ''I recorded the people trying to save him and I didn't expect to see that.

''When I played it back, I caught something like a spirit walking on the water. It had the shape of a man.''

Shanel added that the man was the third person to drown on the same river this year and she believes an evil entity could be responsible for the deaths.

Meanwhile, local officials have warned the residents not to swim in the river as the currents are strong especially during the typhoon season.

The man's body was taken to the hospital and his family was informed about the incident.
