Chennai, the gateway to Tamil Nadu, India, is flooding as cyclone Nivar approaches on Wednesday (November 25).

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for Cyclone Nivar which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. The cyclone is expected to intensify further towards the southeast coast.

The city has received the highest amount of rain with 16 centimeters. Several areas in Chennai witnessed waterlogging for hours while suburbs faced inundation on Tuesday with non-stop rain.

Residents lamented that due to clogged drainages, the stagnated rainwater was mixed with the sewage water.

The cyclone is likely to hit the coast by midnight.
