Palm trees sway to gushing winds in southern India ahead of Cyclone Nivar
A row of palm trees was spotted swaying with the gushing winds approaching coastal towns in southern India's Tamil Nadu ahead of Cyclone Nivar on November 25.
The sight was captured in the state capital Chennai's Thiruvanmiyur neighbourhood at Olympia Jananthi.
A video of the city bracing itself for Nivar shows a row of palm trees planted in a housing society swaying along with the high-speed winds.
Cyclone Nivar began the landfall process, that occurs before the storm crosses the land, at about 11 p.m IST on November 25. The ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ is the third one that made landfall in India this year.
Gale winds and incessant heavy rainfall lashed several areas in and around Chennai and coastal areas as the cyclone moved closer to the coast.
Meanwhile, several areas were flooded with water entering homes and housing colonies. The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments relocated thousands of people from low-lying areas to higher ground and ensured that relief and food were provided to all. Both governments declared a holiday for November 26, with Tamil Nadu declaring a holiday for 16 districts that are expected to be affected.
