Fire departments and police forces in India's Tamil Nadu joined together to help with evacuations after the region has been hit with flash floods as Cyclone Nivar wreaks havoc.

Footage filmed on November 26 on the outskirts of Chennai shows authorities in wetsuits and other protective gear as they use kayaks and dinghies to evacuate residents.

The knee-deep floodwater has left many locals stranded in the low-lying areas which are susceptible to flooding.

Over 30 rescue workers have rushed to evacuate victims of the destruction who are now being housed in government-set camps and provided with food and essentials.

Cyclone Nivar made landfall late on November 25 at around 11 pm, bringing 70 mph winds to the region.

Teams of the Fire Department and local police personnel joined hands to evacuate residents of low-lying areas stranded amid flood-like situation following heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Nivar in southern India's Tamil Nadu on November 26. The evacuation operation took place in the state capital Chennai's Mudichur.

Videos of the operation show authorities in gumboots overseeing the rescue operations. Residents can be seen being rescued from the inundated neighbourhood of Mudichur one after another on lifeboats. A long queue of rescuers can be seen standing in the knee-deep waters with lifebuoys.

Many residents of such low-lying areas have fled to higher ground, while some of them have taken refuge on building terraces. Authorities have also been trying to drain rainwater from deluged regions with the help of electric water pumps.

Cyclone Nivar began the landfall process, that occurs before the storm crosses the land, at about 11 p.m IST on November 25. The ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ is the third one that made landfall in India this year.

The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments relocated thousands of people from low-lying areas to higher ground and ensured that relief and food were provided to all. Both governments declared a holiday for November 26, with Tamil Nadu declaring a holiday for 16 districts that are expected to be affected.
