An unexploded WWII bomb was found after floods from Typhoon Vamco receded in the Philippines.

Residents noticed the large shell after the storm caused rivers to overflow and swamp surrounding fields in Cagayan province on November 23.

The rust-covered UXO is believed to date to 1945. The typhoon floods are believed to have dislodged it from a river bed and carried it away before dropping it on nearby fields.

Local farmer Randy Langcay said that his uncle Mario was the first to discover the vintage bomb while collecting drift firewood in the area around their village in Tuguegarao City.

Randy Langcay said: "We were scared when we saw the bomb so we immediately informed the local council. We thought it had been swept away by the flood.''

The police immediately contacted bomb experts from the Philippine Army to hand over the bomb.

A report from the Police Regional Office 2 stated that a farmer who was gathering firewood saw the 52-inches bomb weighing about 1,000 pounds or 500 kilos.

The bomb is believed to have been carried away from its original resting place by the floodwaters and dumped on the ground when the water subsided.

Lt. Col.Andree Abella, Police Regional Office 2 Information officer, said that the UXO was already brought to the ammo dam in PRO2 for temporary storage.

He added: ''We are still waiting for the approval of disposal in Capas, Tarlac.''

The Cagayan region was one of the worst-affected areas when the typhoon struck earlier this month.

Typhoon Vamco, known locally as Ulysses, killed at least 159 people in the Philippines before moving eastwards and making landfall in Vietnam.
