Emergency crews were seen clearing debris on Thursday (November 26) after Cyclone Nivar tore down trees and power lines in Puducherry, southern India.

Nivar made landfall around 2:30 am near Puducherry on Thursday with winds of up to 130 kilometres (81 miles) per hour.

Footage also shows residents driving flooded streets and downed trees blocking roads.

According to local media, at least three people were killed and three others injured in Tamil Nadu.

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry witnessed a Cyclone Nivar, which was intensified into a "severe cyclonic storm earlier moving towards the North east getting weaker. As predicted by the India Metrological Department the cyclone had its landfall near the Northern parts of Pondicherry in South India. The landfall started at around 11:30 pm. The eye of the cyclone crossed Pondicherry at 2:30AM. During that time the rains lashed the Union territory and many trees were seen uprooted as the gusty winds blew at around 145km/hr
