Four people have been confirmed dead after Cyclone Nivar made its way across southern India.

Footage from November 27 shows the devastation across Mudichur in Tamil Nadu, which was deluged.

Residents had to wade through knee-deep water as life came to a halt after Nivar made landfall in the early hours of Thursday (November 26).

Since then, at least four people have lost their lives, 1,086 trees have been uprooted as the adverse weather brought winds of up to 130 kilometres (81 miles) per hour.

Teams of the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), the various state disaster response forces and the Indian Navy were deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

They were assisted by the local police and respective district administrations and state governments.

Four people were killed in Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Nirav made landfall overnight near the coastal town of Marakkanam, between Puducherry and Chennai, caused considerable damage to crops and fields, besides leaving many areas inundated.

Cyclone Nivar, which made landfall near Puducherry early on November 26, is now a severe cyclonic storm and is expected to weaken further by midnight. It leaves behind a trail of destruction, including flooded roads and damaged property, particularly in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to the India Meteorological Department, Nivar, which crossed the TN coast as a very severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 120 kmph and rain-filled, has moved inland and would gradually weaken by Friday.

Officials said about 1,086 trees were uprooted in Tamil Nadu and almost all of them have been removed. Many residential areas were flooded and people remained indoors. In a few places, overhead electricity cables snapped as heavy trees fell over them and also some vehicles. In Chennai, citizens in many parts complained of disruption in the power supply.
