A rare lunar phenomenon called a "moon halo" occurred over Greece on Sunday (November 29).

Footage from the city of Thessaloniki shows a brightly lit moon, which was accompanied by a gigantic glowing ring.

The filmer explained: "The ring, or a lunar halo, is caused by the refraction and reflection of light from ice crystals that are suspended in thin, wispy, cirrus or cirrostratus clouds that are at high altitudes.

"This ring was very distinct and extremely large in scale like a giant eye in the night sky."
