Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Paris and other cities in France on Saturday (28 November) against a security bill currently before parliament.

The law would restrict images of on-duty police officers and broaden the types of surveillance authorities can use. Its proponents say the security law would only ban images of on-duty police officers that aimed to harm them, but opponents argue it could also ban legitimate scrutiny.

The protests were given added impetus by footage that emerged of French police beating and tear gassing Black music producer Michel Zeclerr on November 21.

In Paris, police initially restricted the main protest to République Square, but the decision was overturned by an administrative court and a collective was allowed to march from République to Bastille as the organisers had requested. The route is typical for protests in Paris.

Estimates say 133,000 marched nationwide, in cities including Paris, Bordeaux, Rennes, and Lyon.
