Laptops filled with $200,000 worth of gold seized from airport in southern India

Airport customs officials have seized gold weighing 3.15 kilograms (6.9 lbs) worth Rs 1.57 crore (USD $212,198) smuggled inside laptops and trolley bags, from a southern Indian airport in Tamil Nadu.

The seizure took place at Chennai International Airport on the night of November 28 and November 29.

Footage from November 29 shows a laptop screen being broken apart to reveal a gold sheet. A trolley bag can also be seen hiding several sheets of gold.

Eight passengers who attempted to smuggle the precious metal had flown in from Dubai.

According to officials, during the night of November 28 and November 29, they intercepted three passengers of flight FZ 851. On examination of their checked-in baggage, 36 mini LCD monitors were found, with gold sheets concealed.

Gold sheets weighing 1.36 kg (2.9 lbs) valued at Rs 68.08 lakh (USD $92,028) were recovered and seized and Mohamed Nagoor Hanifa, aged 36 from the city of Chennai was arrested.

Four passengers who arrived via Air India flight IX 1644 were also intercepted. Examination of their check-in bags revealed several gold sheets concealed inside mini LCD monitors, 10 gold foils concealed in five laptops, and two gold foils concealed in two of their trolley bags.

A total of 28 gold sheets and 12 gold foils weighing 1.62 kg (3.57 lbs) valued at Rs 81.25 lakh (USD $109,829) were recovered and seized. Mohamed Gani, 45, and Hoosainur Rahman, 22, were arrested.

Sahubar Aasik, 24, who had arrived via flight Indigo 6E-66 revealed three plastic pouches of gold paste weighing 190 grams (0.4 lbs) in his trousers. On extraction, 165 grams (0.3 lbs) of gold valued at Rs 8.26 lakh (USD $11,167) was recovered and seized.
