A young inventor from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has built a wind turbine that dispenses clean water along with producing electricity.

The electrical engineering graduate Madhu Vajrakarur has been working on this project for a period of 16 years now.

A video shows the wind turbine placed in a residential colony for the purpose of distributing electricity in nearby houses. A tap can be seen attached to the base of the turbine that dispenses clean drinking water.

The two-in-one wind turbine produces an average of 30KW power and 80-100 liters of water per day. This means it can meet the electricity demands of about 25 households.

There is a vent in center of the fan attached to the wind turbine, through which air is taken in. The air is then cooled with the help of the cooling compressor. In this way, the water vapor present in the moist air is converted into water, which is sent through copper pipes down to storage tanks for filtration and purification.

The local administration has noticed Madhu’s work, and it is expected that it will also be noticed at the national level soon.

The entire project was built within the cost of Rs 80,000 (USD 1,082). Since he does not belong to a well-to-do family, he raised the amount for this project by his own savings.

Vajrakarur’s childhood was deprived of both, clean drinking water and electricity, which is when he decided to work on a solution which eliminates the problem of several rural villages across India.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), billions of people around the world continue to lack access to pure drinking water, sanitation, and electricity. Although the water and electricity supply has significantly increased in India, many people still lack access to these facilities.
