A toddler accidentally locked himself in a car when his mother left him alone while she went shopping.

The two-year-old boy's mother Sumarin Kongsila, 35, parked the Isuzu pick-up truck and left him inside in Ang Thong, central Thailand on November 26 morning.

When Sumarin finished shopping, she returned to the silver vehicle and found that her son had locked the car. She could not open it even after she tried telling the boy to unlock it.

The mother then contacted the emergency services for help while the panic-stricken boy started to cry with fear.

Rescuers arrived and used a wire to open the car window before they reached the lock panel from the outside and opened the car door.

Sumarin rushed to bring her boy out and calmed him down. The mother said she let her boy stay in the car as she thought she would not be long.

She said: ''I wanted to go out and buy something and I thought I would be out for only a short moment.

''However, my son accidentally locked the car and I did not know what to do so I contacted the emergency services.

''I know he could have suffocated inside. I'll be much more careful from now on.''
