Wounded elephant feeds on crops in Sri Lanka
A wounded 12-year-old elephant was spotted feeding itself crops from a field in Sri Lanka on November 30. The sight was captured in Hiriwadunna Lake of Habarana in Anuradhapura district.
A video shows the injured male jumbo standing in a field full of crops. It can barely stand while it munches down on the crops nearby.
The front left hind of the animal can be seen as not being able to take the weight of the elephant. The jumbo levitates the injured one in the air while maintaining balance on the three remaining legs.
The Sri Lankan elephant is one of three recognised subspecies of the Asian elephant, and native to Sri Lanka. Since 1986, it has been listed as endangered by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as the population has declined by at least 50 per cent over the last three generations, estimated to be between 60 and 75 years.
